ADC's Fiber-Optic Transceiver units (referred to as a "FOM," short for Fiber-Optic Modem) interface data terminal equipment ("DTE") to a fiber-optic communications channel. A pair of FOMs provide virtual RS-232 connections between two distant computer devices. A network of FOMs will allow many devices to share a common channel provided the attached instruments are designed for party-line (Master/Slave) communications. The latter is typical of process and supervisory control system applications.
FOMs are situated between the communications port of each DTE device and the fiber cables, and constitute a "node" in a fiber-optic network. The conversion of RS-232 signals to light (and back again) is completely transparently to the attached computers. FOMs also function as repeaters, independently of any attached DTE device. The maximum allowable length of fiber cable between any two FOM nodes is 16,000 feet (5,000 m).
A FOM network provides the same functionality as Bell 103/202 type modems operating over 2/4 wire circuits, and hence FOMs are frequently referred to as "fiber-optic modems." Using light as a transmission medium provides additional benefits including greater distances between nodes and protection from line-borne transients.
